For the second installment of my Vintage Holiday series featuring Mary Kay, we are focusing on the drama and glamour of silver-screen sirens as inspiration. To me, this season’s dramatic plum lip is less about goth-revival and more about film-noir. The women of this genre were often portrayed as voluptuous, seductive, powerful, and almost always glamorous. It’s a type of luxe that lends itself perfectly to the busy social schedules of fancy holiday gatherings.
The winter months call for warm sparkle and cheer but can be harsh on my skin, so I suggest prepping your look with the Mary Kay Foundation Primer so your application goes on smoothly and last longer. Forget the rule that a dark lip color needs to be the only focal point of your beauty look. In this case, I found it best to tie the eyes and lip together in one harmonious palette of golds, violets and plums to exude that mystique associated with a true silver-screen siren. Think about warm tones to complement the berry hue in the lip. Here, I chose my all-time favorite blush color, Sparkling Cider, and the Mary Kay at Play Baked Eye Trio in On The Horizon. I applied a generous amount of the sparkly gold color in the trio to enhance the golden undertones in my skin — this color also really reflects the light coming off of the warmth of the outfit. I also chose to use mineral eye shadow in Amber Blaze to enhance this further and finished the eye with the berry shades in the trio.
The outfit has to harken the feeling of an Old Hollywood diva. It’s something that exudes confidence when you walk in a room, but doesn’t overpower. A dramatic sequin maxi mixed with metals and an overdose of sparkle is finished off and softened by a furry textured shoulder piece. ’Tis the season to embrace tradition so my jewelry and belt were both vintage-inspired but woven together to be gala gorgeously modern. The color palette was kept more neutral to really let the details pop and the shimmer shine.
